  • Packaging Technology and Solutions Center adds efficiency to machine design

The Schneider Electric Packaging Technology and Solutions Center (PTASC) supports machine builders' automation, control and power needs to improve machine design and efficiency.

Barbara Axelson -- Control Engineering, 6/2/2009

The Packaging Technology and Solutions Center (PTASC) in Schaumburg, IL, helps machine builders adapt more complex automation technology and modular design methodologies to their existing operational systems, and enables OEMs to shorten time to market for new products.
Schneider Electric and its packaging-focused subsidiary Elau Inc. cooperate to support machine builders’ automation, control, and power needs there. Packaging technology resources can look at mechatronics to make machines and processes more efficient. For instance,

smart application of servos in machine design can eliminate endless operator adjustments in machinery

    .
Elau made a name for itself within the consumer goods manufacturing industry, the company explains. "When we acquired Elau several years ago, we were impressed by its industry-leading, packaging-specific motion control technology, and its hands-on co-engineering approach to solving its customers' most difficult challenges," said Andy Gravitt, vice president, automation and control, Schneider Electric North American Operating Division. The center expands the resources available to packaging machinery OEMs over a much wider range of Schneider Electric hardware and software solutions, he says.
Staff from Elau work with experts from Schneider Electric's Raleigh, NC-based OEM Technology and Solutions Center to provide a single-point resource for technical, application, and engineering packaging project management. The center includes a 12-seat training facility with test stands to help machine builders learn about the latest hardware and software through interactive classroom training. Additional PTASC resources are located in Boston, MA, and Raleigh, NC.
Bryan Orr, president of Elau's North American operations, is director of the PTASC. "By taking advantage of the breadth of expertise and truly global reach of our parent company, we can provide an unparalleled, holistic approach to optimizing our packaging machinery customers' systems" at the Schneider Electric Packaging Technology and Solutions Center (PTASC), he says.

Control Engineering provides more about packaging automation. Do you know the 5 bottom line improvements to packaging automation?

      Engineering with Ethernet

The debate about Ethernet's viability on the plant floor is no longer an issue for most engineers. Their concerns now focus on the variety of specifications and possibilities for industrial Ethernet-ranging from protocols, switch architectures, and Power over Ethernet to safety concerns, legacy network connection issues and wireless possibilities.

      Technologies for Regulatory Compliance

Regulatory compliance is an issue which is becoming increasingly critical for manufacturers of all types as federal agencies clamp down on violations of all types.
