  • I/O Devices Product Focus Study June 2002

By Control Engineering Staff -- Control Engineering, 3/29/2004

    Executive Summary

    •  Among those specifying, recommending, and/or buying I/O devices, 77% do so for in-plant requirements, while 42% buy for OEM needs.

    •  The primary application for I/O devices among nearly half of those surveyed is both continuous and batch processing.

    •  Discrete input, discrete output, analog input and analog output are each used by more than 90% of respondents; making them the most widely used modules. Results suggest these will continue to be the most popular modules over the next year.

    •  Eighty-four percent of respondents apply their I/O devices within PLC systems. Slot in PLC, PCbased systems, distributed I/O systems and DIN-rail mounted (from PLC control supplier) represent a second tier of popular applications.

    •  4-20 mA is currently the most widely used communications network, based on usage among 90% of those surveyed. However, 4-20 mA will only be used by 83% of respondents next year, while Ethernet usage will grow from 79% to 85% of survey participants.

    •  Slightly more than three-quarters of respondents have purchased I/O devices from Allen- Bradley/Rockwell Automation in the past 12 months. This is more than double the penetration achieved by any other manufacturer.

    •  Respondents spent an average of $165,254 on I/O devices in the past year.

    •  Twenty-four percent of those surveyed report their purchases of I/O devices in the next 12 months will increase by an average of 45%. This compares to 14% of respondents projecting a decline in purchases by an average of 45%.

    • Technical support, ease of use and installation factors are the most important criteria to respondents when buying I/O devices.
