  • Listen in: New alarm management guidelines for electric utilities

By Control Engineering Staff -- Control Engineering, 5/7/2008

EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and PAS, suppliers of process control and alarm management software, have released a new guideline for alarm management for electric power generators. The report builds on work done by Bill Hollifield and Eddie Habibi in their “Alarm Management Handbook,” first published in 2006. (Listen in: Click here to hear a 4-minute interview with Eddie Habibi on the nature of alarm management and what is driving this development.)

“EPRI Alarm Management and Annunciator Guidelines” was developed by the two organizations in response to increasing industry interest in the current state of alarm management and best practices tailored to the needs of users in utilities industries.

“We have seen demand for information on alarm management grow increasingly in recent years and decided to place significant time and effort into producing a report on alarm management specifically for our industry. We enlisted PAS based on their demonstrated expertise in this area to help us create a comprehensive document,” says Wayne Crawford, program manager, operations management and technology at EPRI.

Eddie Habibi, CEO at PAS adds, “We are thrilled to have been invited to co-author such a critical document. The guideline represents the current best practices in alarm management and provides an invaluable resource to the power industry.”

Other works on the topic of alarm management are available through the PAS Website and through ISA.
