  • Siemens Scalance XB unmanaged Ethernet switch

Siemens Energy & Automation Inc. expanded its Scalance X family of industrial Ethernet switches to include the simple to use, space saving and affordable Scalance XB, company says.

    -- Control Engineering, 7/20/2009

Siemens Energy & Automation Inc. expanded its Scalance X family of industrial Ethernet switches to include the simple to use, space saving and affordable Scalance XB. The entry level, Scalance XB unmanaged industrial Ethernet switch can be used in a line or star topology where simple plug-and-play connections and low-cost port expansion features are required. The switches are available with up to eight 10/100 Mbit/s ports.

Offering an IP20 degree of protection in a small, compact design the new line of switches are constructed with a durable plastic housing that is easily mounted on standard rails.
Diagnostics available on the switch include power, link status and traffic data and are indicated by LEDs.

    Scalance X Family
Siemens Scalance X family of switches helps reduce downtime by enabling fast device replacement. Easy configuration with built-in Web management tools help reduce cost of ownership. The switches also offer fast commissioning, complete diagnostics via LED and Profinet I/O connections and the reliability of standard redundant point-to-point connections and power supply, company says.
-Scalance X100 Unmanaged Switch - This switch combines a compact design with electrical and optical ports with redundant power supply connection and remote diagnostics.
-Scalance X200 Compact Managed Switch - This managed switch offers SNMP diagnostics, operates without an enclosure and can be mounted externally on a machine. Troubleshooting time is reduced with fast ring redundancy and a free web-based tool to diagnose cable breaks and lost communications.
-Scalance X300 Compact Managed gigabit switch - This switch helps migrate Fast Ethernet to Gigabit standards, providing the ability to integrate plant floor networks with enterprise networks via high speed backbone. The Scalance X300 switch offers three gigabit ports and delivers the superior management features of VLAN and IGMP snooping and query.
-Scalance X400 Multi-port Gigabit Managed Switch - The X400 delivers the attractive office features of VLAN, spanning tree and web- based management, Layer 3 switching (IP routing), SNMP diagnostics and IGMP snooping. The switch is easily integrated into enterprise and plant networks and is scalable up to 26 ports per switch. A redundant ring manager function enables extremely high speed Ethernet and gigabit rings with fast redundancy (less than 0.3 seconds).

      Engineering with Ethernet

The debate about Ethernet's viability on the plant floor is no longer an issue for most engineers. Their concerns now focus on the variety of specifications and possibilities for industrial Ethernet-ranging from protocols, switch architectures, and Power over Ethernet to safety concerns, legacy network connection issues and wireless possibilities.

      Technologies for Regulatory Compliance

Regulatory compliance is an issue which is becoming increasingly critical for manufacturers of all types as federal agencies clamp down on violations of all types.
