Shanghai, China —Following recent biennial exhibitions in Beijing, Miconex—International Fair for Measurement, Instrumentation, and Automation—returns to Shanghai's Mart Exhibition Center on Oct. 23-26, 2001. Miconex debuted in Shanghai in 1983.

Miconex is regarded as China's most important trade show for measurement, instrumentation and automation by the event's joint organizers: Messe Düsseldorf China Ltd. (MDC, Shanghai) and China Instrument and Control Society (CIS, Beijing). MDC is a subsidiary of Messe Düsseldorf, organizer of the Interkama trade fair in Germany.

At the previous Miconex, held in Beijing in Sept. 2000, nearly 500 exhibitors from 14 countries participated. Some 91 companies from countries outside of China took part, including group exhibits from the U.S., Germany, and Britain. A majority of the more than 45,000 Chinese visitors represented industries, such as chemical, petrochemical, electronics, iron and steel, and machinery.

A highlight of this year's show will be a Summit Forum on "Development of Measurement & Control and Scientific Instruments," on Oct. 23-24. It will provide a platform for heads of R&D centers, manufacturers, and end-users to exchange information on new technologies and management models. The forum is also seen as promoting closer international cooperation and fostering development of measurement, control, and scientific instruments.

Main sponsors of the event are UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization); UNIDO (UN Industrial Development Organization); Ministry of Science and Technology, P.R.C.; Shanghai Municipal Government; and CIS.

The organizers expect 300 prominent attendees from respected organizations—such as UNESCO, ISA (USA), and instrumentation and control societies from Japan, Korea, Singapore, and the U.K—as well as decision-makers and ceos form notable international corporations. These include ABB, Alstom, Emerson Process Management, Fluke, Foxboro, Fuji, Hitachi, Honeywell, Invensys Process Systems, Omron, Philips, Rockwell Automation, Samsung, Siemens, Toshiba, and many Chinese firms.

Presentations will focus on such topics as innovation/development of the IT industry in 21st century; global instrumentation trends; economic cooperation between Chinese instrument companies and their international counterparts; new instrumentation technologies; and strategies for management, investment, markets, and e-commerce.
