Houston, Tex.— By common consent, organizers and exhibitors at ISA 2001 agreed to close the show a day early in light of Sept. 11's terrorist attacks, which destroyed New York's World Trade Center towers and damaged the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Shock, grief and outrage affected the show's visitors and exhibitors in the same way everyone in the U.S. was totally distracted when the attacks occurred. Numerous business, sports and cultural events were postponed or cancelled nationwide in response to the tragedies. Many were replaced with prayer vigils and other religious services. "Show management put the question of closing to exhibitors. That is, if they wanted to close at the end of Wednesday, or continue on Thursday. They voted to close the show," said Mark Hoske, editor-in-chief, Control Engineering, from Houston.
