Olflex wires New Year's Eve ball in Times Square

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/2000

New York, N.Y. Olflex-FD 855 P continuous flex cable from Olflex Wire & Cable (Fairfield, N.J.) helped ring in 2000 and the new millennium as part of a newly redesigned New Year's Eve ball that lit up Times Square.

Olflex's cable delivered power to 696 lamps illuminating the ball and helped control movement of 92 rotating, pyramid-shaped mirrors that reflected the light. These pyramids included 504 crystal triangles featuring Waterford Crystal's original "Star of Hope" design.

The ball's lights consisted of 600 multi-colored Philips light bulbs and 96 high-intensity strobes. This created a dazzling effect for the celebrating crowds at Times Square, not to mention national and international TV audiences.

Olflex-FD 855 P was used because it's lightweight, flexible, and tolerates temperatures from -30 to +80 °C without losing its flexibility. "We're proud to be one of the many companies that helped make this New Year's Eve ball bigger and better than ever before," says Richard Buchicchio, Olflex's marketing director.
