Single-chip disk combines flash memory, controller

Staff -- Control Engineering, 3/1/1999

Tel Aviv, Israel M-Systems recently launched a tiny single-chip flash disk, MD2200, that combines a controller and high-density flash memory in a single-die, 32-pin DIP package. MD2200 is the first model in M-Systems' DiskOnChip Millennium series. With 8 MB (64 Mbit) performance, an EDC/ECC controller, a small footprint, and low-power consumption, MD2200 can be used in Internet access devices, smart phones, and handheld PCs. Measuring 11.7321.331.2 mm, MD2200 is also useful in embedded systems and small consumer appliances requiring components with minimal weight, size, and power needs. MD2200 offers full hard-disk emulation and operates on one 3.3 V or 5 V power supply. DiskOnChip Millennium's flexible "plug-and-play" installation means system designers can put DIP sockets and SMT packages on the same board. The current DiskOnChip family's capacity ranges from 2 MB to 144 MB.
