Geneva, Switzerland—International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Committee of Action members will probably reexamine the proposed IEC 61158 fieldbus standard at their late-June meeting. IEC's TC65 subcommittee voted in mid-April to send IEC 61158 to its parent, the Committee of Action, without a specific recommendation. This leaves unchanged a Jan. 15 recommendation by IEC's SC65C working group to disqualify six "no" votes that defeated IEC 61158 in September 1998. If just four of the negative votes are found to be technically unsupported and overturned by a minimum two-thirds majority of the Committee of Action, then IEC 61158 could be resuscitated. This is because its opponents on SC65C would no longer have the 25% of the ballot required to reject it. This could potentially pave the way for IEC 61158 to become an international standard.
