Welsh firm brings German drives to U.K.

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/1999

Newtown, Wales— Through its acquisition last June of German drives manufacturer Dietz-electronic, Focus Dynamics has begun an expansion strategy by launching the Dietz variable frequency range as the cornerstone of its drives program in the U.K. and, eventually, other countries. The launch signals the start of Focus Dynamics' sales drive for its industrial control products across many international markets, according to Mike Gulliford, ceo. He said his company wants to build a truly integrated product range that encompasses not only drives, but also motors, pumps, and fans—a total worldwide market of $80 billion. A key to the strategy is a network of "Focus Centers," small distribution and support facilities staffed by 20 to 30 employees, with sales in the $5 to $8 million range. The company took its first step in August 1998 with the acquisition of KEM Engineering (Whitstable, Kent). Mr. Gulliford plans to open another five focus centers in other countries by July 1999. He added Focus will have its own line of motors, by the end of 1999.
