• DMU-FOG, a fiber-optic gyro (FOG)-based sensor subsystem from Crossbow Technology Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) that uses silicon micromachined technology and proprietary digital signal processing algorithms to create reliable replacements for older mechanical vertical gyros and ring-laser gyros in certain applications. FOGs are used for angular rate and rotation sensing in applications requiring great accuracy over long measurement periods without human intervention. These include marine platform stabilization, satellite communication, military turret stabilization, surveying machine control, industrial robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

• Two compact (937.2931.52) portable data acquisition systems, DI-720 and DI-730, from Dataq Instruments (Akron, O.), that feature one of the industry's first measurement ranges of ±10 mV to ±800 V dc (or peak ac) across six ranges per channel with ±1,000 V channel-to-channel isolation. To make installation easier, they communicate with the PC's printer port in EPP, bi-directional, or standard mode. DI-730 also offers eight different channels at sampling speeds of 250 kHz at 16-bit resolution.

• Massa Products Corp.'s (Hingham, Mass.) new user-programmable smart ultrasonic sensor, MassaSonic M-500/220, combines electroacoustics with microprocessor-based digital signal processing and can be used in a range of factory automation and industrial process control applications. All of M-5000's settings can be fully programmed without requiring a target by using Microsoft Windows-compatible PC software. This eliminates the mechanical, sealing, and tampering issues inherent in traditional analog output ultrasonic sensors that need adjustment potentiometers or pushbuttons, as well as a target to set span or zero.

• MSP-200 panel-mount pressure transducer from Measurement Specialties Inc. (Fairfield, N.J.) is made from one piece of 17-4 PH stainless steel, so it has no internal o-rings, welds, or silicon- or oil-filled cavities. The transducer includes the company's microfused, micromachined, silicon strain-gage technology, and provides reliable operation in hostile media at up to 5,000 psi (340 bar).
