Houston, Tex. — Following the recent rejection of IEC 61158, members of the International Electrotechnical Commission's SC 65C subcommittee for digital communications were asked at the IEC's Oct. 20 meeting here to analyze six "no" votes to find if they had a valid technical basis, if they related to the document being voted on, and if their technical comments were true. The members have two months to recommend in a letter ballot whether the six votes should be removed from IEC 61158's Sept. 30 voting results. If four of the "no" votes are overturned, it could lower the percentage of votes against IEC 61158 below the 25% threshold required for rejection. This means IEC 61158 would then pass on all criteria for the IEC to publish it as an international fieldbus standard. The subcommitee also voted that, for the present, IEC 61158's four documents should become a Technical Report Type 1. This means SC 65 C would have three years to resubmit it to IEC for standardization. (See this issue's News section for more on IEC 61158.)
