Efficient ac motor control
-- Control Engineering, 9/1/2001

El Segundo, Calif. - New process technology
for IGBTs (insulated-gate bipolar transistors) and FREDs (fast recovery
epitaxial diodes) promises increased useful speed range for ac motors. These
power-switching devices-used in welders and uninterruptible power supplies, as
well-can now deliver 70% faster turn-off time (0.3 µsec) than prior units, and
20% less power loss than best available products, according to the company.
Benefits include improved low-speed control for wider applications, smaller heat
sink requirements and package sizes, and three times more noise immunity. Two
IGBT/FRED Co-Packs are available for sampling. The devices provide power levels
up to 7.5 hp for bridge-type inverters of 400-480 V ac input.
