Low-cost, six-axis motion sensing
-- Control Engineering, 8/1/2000

San Jose, Calif.-Six degrees of freedom (6 DOF) motion sensing with high-performance is the claim to fame of DMU-H6X inertial measurement unit (IMU) from Crossbow Technology. The digital, six-axis IMU measures X-, Y-, and Z-axis acceleration, plus roll-, pitch-, and yaw-axis angular rates-all without the need for calibration. DMU-H6X provides bias stability of <10 mG for the accelerometers and <±1 °/sec for the rate sensors, over the unit's full temperature range (-40 to 85 °C). Intended for demanding vehicle-testing environments in automotive, marine, or airborne systems, the IMU is priced at $3,495 for quantity one. Comparably performing 6 DOF units reportedly cost $10,000 or more.
