Ethernet, legacy network, coexist

Staff -- Control Engineering, 9/1/2004

Vnet/IP network offers multiplexed band communication with a reliable, real-time, flexible protocol on high-speed Ethernet media. This upgrade is an innovative control protocol on an open network that provides communication band partitioning, redundant communication on Ethernet, and secured information exchange using state-of-the art technology on Yokogawa devices. It also takes advantage of enhanced technologies in Ethernet switches by providing stable and secure 1Gbits/sec communications.

This networking structure upgrade is part of the next release of the company's Centum CS 3000 R3 integrated production control system. It will include support for a new controller and a path to the new structure for current installations. Network coexists with general Ethernet protocols on TCP/IP and uses built-in standard protocols—such as simple network time protocol (SNTP) and simple network management protocol (SNMP)—and commercial off-the-shelf network equipment (switches, routers, optical-fiber cable).

Flattened communication structure offers flexibility in architecture and topologies. Referred to as 'enhanced (encapsulated) Vnet,' Vnet/IP provides the open control network structure necessary for an evolving Centum system. Control communication remains secure and reliable, priority communication control achieves secured response time, and communication band partitioning achieves co-existence of Vnet technologies and open communications. www.us.yokogawa.com
