CNC system handles 64 axes, uses SERCOS

Bosch Rexroth's IndraMotion MTX

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/2005

Bosch Rexroth reports that IndraMotion MTX from its Electric Drives and Controls division is a computer numerical control (CNC) system, available in PC control or PLC-based architectures, that handles up to 64 motion axes, with 12 electric servo axes controlled from one card. SERCOS communication interface links the system's electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic intelligence.

IndraMotion's open architecture provides flexibility at the software level and at the sensor/actuator level. The controller works with current Microsoft operating systems, and uses related communications. For example, a Microsoft .Net framework is the foundation for IndraMotion's user-interface and integrated engineering environment. Standardized PC technologies, such as OPC, ActiveX, and XML, provide an integration path for additional software. Ethernet TCP/IP is available for communication with other components and systems. A uniform API offers standardized access to controller data for process optimization or integration of application-specific visualization or control features.

In addition, numerical control and an integrated, multi-tasking, IEC 61131-3-compliant PLC in IndraMotion share the same hardware and Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system. Bosch Rexroth adds that its solution provides standardized control features, as well as simple design planning tools and outstanding system performance. IndraMotion's PLC executes 1,000 statements in only 60 µs, while its CNC guarantees a maximum interpolation time of 1 ms when controlling eight axes. One controller can operate up to 64 axes by using its 12 independent CNC channels. www.boschrexroth-us.com
