Holographic interface's keypad images float in air

HoloTouch, Atlantex's BeamOne Touchless Holographic Interface

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/2005

The BeamOne Touchless Holographic Interface is a fully functional, touchless, holographic interface that lets operators enter commands and data into electronic equipment by simply passing a finger through holographic images of "keys" floating in the air at a convenient location. The device is powered by and delivers data to the USB or other standard PC port.

Atlantex Corp. reports that Beam-One uses HoloTouch Inc.'s technology to generate its floating controls images, which are presented as a simple four-button keypad, appearing approximately 4-in. in front of the device. BeamOne's programmable unit comes with all necessary software, as well as infrared (IR) sensors to detect an operator's interaction with the holographic images.

As a result, users activate the buttons by touching spots where they appear to be and can perform a variety of control functions. The partners say their BeamOne interface is suitable for applications in which mechanical switches aren't rugged enough, where sterilization or hygiene is an issue, or when the user interface needs to be bigger than the device.

"This compact device demonstrates there are no practical barriers to using our innovative, touchless, holographic actuation and control technology in a wide variety of electronic equipment, including those sold in the automotive, banking, factory-floor, gaming, kiosk, and many other markets," adds R. Douglas McPheters, HoloTouch's president. www.holotouch.com
