Color graphics displays to control railroad switchyard

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/2006

Canadian National Railway Co. (CN), Canada's largest railroad, will upgrade switchyard workstation displays with color graphic systems.

The equipment, TessEm7000 from Newcon Data, will be used at CN's MacMillan yard in Concord, ON, north of Toronto. The system replaces the railway's older ABB Tesselator-based technology. Newcon has been part of the development team on the Tesselator product family and has handled maintenance, administration, technical support, and new software development on this line for ABB Automation Technologies since 1991.

The new software product emulates the previous system. It runs on a standard PC under Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 operating systems. CN will use the technology to build a PC-based multi-display workstation to control the switchyard.

"The software is compatible with our former technology," says Jean Donato, project manager for CN, "so that we do not have to change the host application."
