Up to 0.5 kW continuous power into 2-cu in. drive

Whistle Miniature Digital Servo Drive by Elmo Motion Control Inc.

Staff -- Control Engineering, 1/1/2006

Motors, Drives, & Motion Control

Small and light enough to be mounted to a motor housing or in close proximity to a motor, the Whistle Miniature Digital Servo Drive is matchbox-sized (2 cu in.). It delivers up to 0.5 kW continuous power at up to 99% efficiency and weighs only 1.76 oz (50 g). The 2-in. long x 1.8-in. deep x 0.6-in. high package delivers a peak of 1 kW power.

Seven models offer a range of voltage and current levels—from 1 A at 60 V to 5 A at 100 V continuous operation. Drive provides sinusoidal current, velocity, and full position control and interfaces to various motors—brush dc, brushless PM, linear, and voice-coil types. It's powered by an external 7.5-95 V dc-isolated-dc supply. A "smart" supply-control algorithm allows single power-supply operation, eliminating the need for a separate logic supply. Whistle incorporates a digital motion controller that features CANopen networking, a position loop, a velocity loop, a current loop, and a variety of feedback and I/O options.

Elmo Motion Control also has announced an analog version of the drive—named Ocarina—with the same output and size as Whistle.
