Exclusive: Stackable Ethernet I/O blocks

Staff -- Control Engineering, 7/1/2006

Control Components

ES2113 is the first model to be released in Acromag's EtherStax line of rugged, high-density Ethernet I/O blocks for distributed I/O and SCADA applications. Device processes 96 channels of discrete input or output signals with Modbus TCP/IP communication to a host controller. It uses the company's i2o technology for peer-to-peer communication between I/O units.

Dual network ports support 10/100Base-TX copper and 100Base-FX fiber-optic connections and provide a redundant communication path for critical applications. Configuration menus provided in an embedded Web page are accessible with any Web browser to eliminate programming. The two communication protocols enable EtherStax units to operate as controller slaves or to communicate independently between units.

Model interfaces with any mix of up to 96 discrete input and/or output signals. Inputs and outputs are connected in tandem with each other for easy "loop-back" monitoring of the output. Selectable internal or external excitation on each 16-channel port simplifies wiring and increases flexibility for 5 to 28-V dc logic. An internal isolated, dual-port Ethernet switch features automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover for diagnostics and network expansion.

EtherStax I/O designs are said to provide high reliability. Units feature 1,500 Vrms isolation with surge protection to increase performance and minimize downtime. Isolation separates power, relay, I/O connections, and individual Ethernet ports. Devices are well-suited to end-user and OEM applications, including substations, distribution lines, and storage tanks. Compact design permits installation in tight spaces. Stackable IP40 aluminum enclosure resists shock and vibration for machinery mounting. Nearly 300 I/O blocks will stack in an 8 x 6-in. footprint. A low-cost, open-board version is also available for custom mounting. Prices start at $895. www.acromag.com Acromag Inc.
