Training: Free modeling, simulation tutorials

-- Control Engineering, 12/15/2006

Got a little free time over the holidays? Spend it learning about the power and benefits of physical modeling, simulation, and virtual prototyping through a series of free, CD-ROM-based multiphysics tutorials from Comsol.

According to Wikipedia, “multiphysics treats simulations that involve multiple physical models. For example, combining chemical kinetics and fluid mechanics or combining finite elements with molecular dynamics. Multiphysics typically involves solving coupled systems of partial differential equations.”

Comsol, founded in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden, offers Comsol Multiphysics, a scientific-software environment for the modeling and simulation of any physics-based system. Optional modules add discipline-specific tools for chemical engineering, earth science, electromagnetics, heat transfer, MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), and structural mechanics. These could benefit designs in process control, embedded systems, and motion control.

The following CDs are available free of charge:

  • Introduction to Multiphysics Modeling – Describes a general approach to modeling using FEA (finite element analysis) and devotes a separate animated, narrated session to each step needed to successfully create a model. It also introduces the viewer to a variety of analysis tools and simulation techniques for model optimization and other design goals;
  • Introduction to AC/DC Simulations – Examples aid in understanding the electromagnetics of rotating machinery and show how to optimize the mechanical design of electrical components such as inductors;
  • Introduction to Acoustics Simulations – Examples look at the design of loudspeakers, the acoustics of an automobile interior, and the aeroacoustic properties of an airplane engine;
  • Introduction to RF Simulations – Models that address microwave components and antenna designs; and
  • Introduction to the Comsol Reaction Engineering Lab.
