New 900 MHz wireless radio penetrates walls, foliage

-- Control Engineering, 11/1/2007

ProSoft Technology introduces its RadioLinx 900 MHz Industrial Frequency Hopping Serial and Ethernet radios for demanding hazardous, indoor or outdoor applications.
ProSoft Technology’s new RadioLinx 900 MHz Industrial Frequency Hopping Serial and Ethernet radios (RLX-IFH9S and RLX-IFH9E, respectively) are designed to perform in demanding, hazardous, indoor or outdoor applications. For indoor applications, the radios’ powerful signals are can penetrate walls, floors, and ceilings more effectively than a 2.4 or 5 GHz band radio.

In outdoor and remote projects the radio (which is UL/CSA Class I, Div 2 approved for hazardous environments) can pierce through more foliage than alternatives without losing signal reliability. They offer programmable frequencies, data rate, and transmit power.

Ideal applications include those spread over wide areas and with many remote devices for industries, including oil and gas, water and wastewater, and mining.

The radios are highly powerful, equipped with a full 1 Watt of power, which enable them to maintain strong signals while communicating over long ranges.

They operate at high speeds, with a radio frequency data rate of 1.1 Mbps for the RLX-IFH9E (230 kbps for RLX-IFH9S) translating into benefits including the speed necessary for Ethernet based SCADA and faster polling times for serial SCADA.

For high security applications, the RLX-IFH radios use a strong data encryption method known as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The have a proprietary frequency hopping radio signal that is hard to detect or jam.

They have advanced remote diagnostics, such as voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), a measure of the network’s ability to deliver maximum power with minimum distortion of the RF signal. The radios include an OPC server for embedding diagnostics in HMI clients. The products come with unlimited support.
