Bluetooth gateway reduces cable headaches for motion systems

-- Control Engineering, 2/13/2008

Chicago, IL — The new industrial Wireless Network Platform from wireless infrastructure provider connectBlue enables an industrial connection free of cabling concerns. Said to be robust and reliable, the Bluetooth protocol connects an Ethernet based infrastructure and industrial equipment, such as machines, machine parts, barcode readers, mobile human-machine interface (HMI) devices, sensors, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

The connectBlue industrial Wireless Network Platform is said to easily connect moving and rotating machines to Ethernet.

In demanding industrial applications, the platform acts as a universal “Ethernet to Bluetooth” gateway easily configured via customized Web pages. For example, it can replace Ethernet cables by providing wireless communication to moving and rotating devices, or replacing difficult or expensive to install cable runs. The device accommodates up to seven Bluetooth Serial Port connections to an Ethernet network, providing virtual serial cables between the industrial devices and a PC connected to the Ethernet, company says.

“The Wireless Network Platform does not just simplify and reduce the actual installation costs, it also provides a completely maintenance free connection,” says Rolf Nilsson, president of connectBlue. “Although the product itself is new, the underlying platform is a proven solution that has been in years of operation 24-7 under rough industrial conditions,” Nilsson adds.
