Thermal management: Painted NEMA 4X stainless steel wall-mounted enclosure

-- Control Engineering, 4/3/2008

Anoka, MNHoffman offers the new Type 4X Stainless Steel Wall-Mount Enclosure painted with a white polyester powder finish inside and out to reduce solar radiation absorption and keep internal components cooler. Rugged stainless steel construction protects electrical components and controls against outdoor and corrosive environments; white polyester finish delivers excellent thermal management at a lower cost, company says.

This enclosure offers the same durability of the company’s standard 14-gauge Type 304 stainless steel offerings, and white finish keeps internal enclosure temperature up to 10 degrees F lower than traditional stainless steel enclosure in identical environments. This single-door enclosure features continuously welded, ground smooth seams, with no holes or knockouts, and its data pocket is constructed of high-impact thermoplastic. The enclosure additionally offers Hoffman’s exclusive Type 316L stainless steel small Powerglide Padlocking Handle with internal 3-point latching. This combination ensures the enclosure is secure and water-tight and allows easy access to internal components.

“We developed this product offering to meet customer requests for a cost-effective stainless steel enclosure for challenging outdoor or corrosive applications,” said Toni Amenrud, Hoffman vertical market manager. “White painted stainless steel significantly reduces solar heat load in direct sunlight without involving additional thermal management.” Amenrud adds, “The Painted Type 4X Stainless Steel Wall-Mount Enclosure is part of our standard product line to deliver the short lead times our customers require in a convenient, cost-saving package.”

A Type 4 gasket provides a water- and dust-tight seal, and its 90-degree flange top collar on the top of the body opening keeps out harmful liquids and contaminants. The enclosure meets Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 508A, UL508; UL Type 3R, 4, 4X and 12; National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)/EEMAC Type 3R, 4, 4X, 12 and 13; and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.2 No. 94 Type 4, 4X and 12. Standard sizes are offered from stock for quick delivery; numerous modification services options also are available.

Rugged, outdoor or corrosive applications include petrochemical plants, pulp and paper processing operations, packaging applications, water treatment facilities, food processing, and pharmaceutical applications.

Hoffman is a member of the Pentair Technical Products Group, which also includes Pentair Electronic Packaging, Schroff, Pentair Enclosures Europe, Pentair Enclosures Asia, and McLean Thermal.
