Portable computing: Operators can be mobile with rugged HMI

-- Control Engineering, 5/8/2008

The Rexroth IndraControl VCH08 portable human machine interface (HMI) makes it easier for equipment operators to set up, run and diagnose their machinery, especially in gantry, material handling, line transfer, or large manufacturing cell applications. The ergonomic unit, which weighs about two pounds and features a sturdy plastic housing with an IP65 protection, is part of the Rexroth IndraControl V family of HMI devices and industrial PCs

VCH08 comes with a 3.8-inch LCD screen, universal-use touch panel, and an attached communication cable. Other features include a keypad for data input with permanently labeled keys, a dedicated Shift key for one-handed data input, a USB port for service tasks, and 12 LED function keys that detail real-time transfer status. The round-shaped panel supports both right- and left-handed operators.

To safeguard both the operator and the machine, special controls include an integrated three-position double-circuit enabling switch as well as a two-circuit stop button. In situations when the operator is moving around a large machine or manufacturing cell with multiple stations, the hot plug-enabled terminal automatically activates the stop function when the HMI is connected or disconnected. Optional features include an override function and handwheel.

The Rexroth IndraControl VCH08 supports all common Rexroth PC- and controller-based PLC, motion control and CNC controls. It provides read and write access to network controls via a fast and reliable Ethernet port. Project planning takes place in the Rexroth IndraWorks engineering program, where all software tools for set-up, operation and diagnosis are combined in a single platform.
