Environmental stewardship featured in new CETV video

-- Control Engineering, 6/1/2008

A new 23-minute video, focusing on several aspects of “green” engineering, is available for download at www.controleng.com/BCVideo.html.

In the video, Joel Shapiro, group manager for industrial measurements and control at National Instruments, sets the stage with an overview of engineers’ role in the major technological trends that have taken place over the past 30 years, culminating with the most recent trend: environmental stewardship.

Shapiro explains how engineers can participate in and, in fact, lead development of green technologies by applying a two-step method, which he refers to as “Green Engineering,” consisting first of measuring, then fixing. The “measure” step provides a baseline for a given situation, and identifies the most serious environmental problems amenable to technical correction. The “fix” step applies engineering expertise to alleviate these environmental problems.

Finally, Shapiro presents several examples of how engineers have successfully used these “green” methods in conventional environmental projects, as well as industrial projects that one would not readily identify as being environmentally focused.

Other videos now playing at www.controleng.com/cetv: Craft brewery adopts automation platform; Controlling the world’s largest machine; Thought controlled wheelchair; Automatic guided vehicles at GM; and Alon Refinery upgrade.
