Small reader knows many codes

-- Control Engineering, 6/1/2008

Multi-Code Reader from ifm efector inc. reads 2D data matrix codes (DMC) and 1D bar codes in high-speed industrial automation applications. It can identify, verify, and qualify most marking methods including dot-peened, laser-etched, and printed DMC codes as well as printed barcodes. The $850 list price is about half the price of competing systems, ifm says. Solid-state, robust metal housing measures 80 x 42 x 53 mm and is designed to withstand harsh environments and perform in fast-moving applications, up to 7 m/sec target speed.

The Multi-Code Reader from ifm efector inc. reads many 2D and 1D data and bar codes in high-speed industrial applications.  Models are defined by field of view and operating distance.
The unit reads ECC200, PDF-417, and QR codes, and 19 styles of printed barcodes. Applications include laser-etched code on glass, dot-peened code on highly reflective metal parts, and printed code on plastic. It uses a high-performance CMOS image sensor, digital signal processor, and integrated lighting system with four segments that can be turned on or off for proper brightness and contrast. It can interface with, but does not require, external lighting. A smart algorithm reads any orientation codes; partially damaged or worn codes are reliably identified, company says.

Visible red beam helps with alignment during setup. Fine focus adjustment and auto recognition save time. On-board menu or PC-based software helps configuration. It can be mounted with various brackets 2-in. to 30-in. from codes. Setup wizard guides configuration in a few steps; individual data matrix modules can be enlarged or reduced. Integrated verifier system matches read codes with user-defined codes and communicates the decoded data matrix to a controller. It has an integrated switching output for digital I/O and an Ethernet TCP/IP or serial RS-232 for data transfer. Two 24 V dc models have VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. www.ifmefector.com ifm efector inc.
