Modular, I/O-intensive single-board computers

-- Control Engineering, 6/1/2008

Diamond Systems Corp. announced a design methodology that reduces costs and risk, and simplifies designs for traditional users of stackable single board computers (SBCs). It consists of off-the-shelf, application-specific I/O-intensive computer-on-module (COM) carrier baseboards to be used with industry-standard, off-the-shelf ETX CPUs. Using this approach, a two-board “sandwich” (ETX CPU plus baseboard) provides an application solution which previously required three to five or more stackable I/O modules and a CPU card. By using the modules, each baseboard supports a wide range of solutions. The approach offers advantages over stacked solutions and reduces system size and costs. Diamond Systems’ initial standard product offering in this arena is Neptune, an I/O-rich, high-integration EPIC single board computer. Its baseboard integrates capabilities of five traditional PC/104 I/O modules into a single EPIC-sized board. An off-the-shelf standard product intended for production deployment, Neptune’s baseboard serves as a reference design that Diamond Systems can use to create application-specific solutions to meet customers’ requirements. www.diamondsystems.com Diamond Systems Corp.
