Listen in: New podcast says effective process control depends on well tuned instrumentation

-- Control Engineering, 7/17/2008

There’s a new podcast now available online with Don Morrison, one of Honeywell Process Solution’s evangelists for APC (advanced process control). While you may think this is a topic for another newsletter, he stresses the importance of effective instrumentation in the larger control picture. (Click here for a preview of the complete podcast.)

Don makes the point that before an APC strategy can be deployed, it is necessary to go through the plant and make sure everything works, particularly individual instruments and control actuator devices. In fact, he says that such a plant audit and tune-up allows you to pick up many of the benefits of a new control strategy without changing anything, at least temporarily. If you want to know more, you’ll have to listen to the whole podcast.

I recall a webcast that Don did a year or more ago, (no longer available, unfortunately) and the topic of instrumentation came up there too. He made the point that effective control doesn’t demand the fanciest, newest instrumentation technologies. While those can be helpful, conventional devices that are reliable and well maintained make all the difference.
