Winners: Instrumentation & Control Components

-- Control Engineering, 2/1/2008

Components & connectors: Fluke 771 Milliamp Process Clamp Meter

Fluke Corporation

The Fluke 771 is designed for use in environments where it is impractical to shut down processes or put systems into “safe” mode to break the loop and place a meter in series with the circuit. It features a unique detachable clamp that can be used docked or detached via extension cable to facilitate measurement in tight spaces. A measurement spotlight illuminates wires in dark enclosures, and the Fluke 771 also has a dual backlit display that shows both mA measurement and percent of 4-20 mA span, plus a “hold” function to capture and display changing measurements for convenient viewing. Users can also measure 10-50 mA signals in older control systems using the 99.9 mA range.

Instrumentation & analysis:  ABB SM500F four channel recorder

ABB Instrumentation

ABB’s SM500F is a four-channel recorder that takes recording and monitoring out of the control room and offers users localized access to operational data wherever the process may be. Its fully sealed IP66 and NEMA 4X enclosure provides protection against water and dust, making it ideal for hose-down and dirty applications found in water and wastewater plants. Process data is presented in a choice of display formats, including chart, bar graph and digital indicator views. Historical logs also provide operators with access to alarm, totalizer and audit trail data. The SM500F’s onboard Web server also provides access to real-time data using the Microsoft Internet Explorer platform.

Process sensors:  UWTC Thermocouple-to-Wireless Connector

Omega Engineering

Omega’s Wireless Thermocouple Connector Series features stand-alone, compact, battery powered thermocouple connectors that transmit readings to a host receiver up to 90 m away. Thermocouple-to-Wireless Connector/Converter Model UWTC can be programmed in the field to work as a type J, K, T, E, R, S, B, N, or C calibration connector. When activated the connector will transmit readings continuously at pre set time interval that was programmed by the user during initial setup. Each unit measures and transmits thermocouple input reading, connector ambient temperature, RF signal strength, and battery condition to the host, which is displayed on the PC screen in real time using the provided software.
