The launch of SPUTNIK, a grapefruit sized Russian satellite on Oct. 4, 1957, highlighted the fact that there was no agency in the US Government devoted to exploring exotic technology and its impact on US defense. To correct this President Eisenhower created in 1958 what is now known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Their 50 year mission has been to go where no Government R&D has dared to go. To explore the far edges of technology and discover what is out there before our enemies do. As examples imagine the tremendous tactical advantage the first country to develop Borg nanotechnology as illustrated in the TV series Star Trek: Voyager will have or the impact military vehicles that can drive themselves will have.

First to orbit the earth, grapefruit size Russian satellite: ñïóòíèê (SPUTNIK)
