Pump Pain, we all suffer from it.
March 12, 2008

Mars Rover exploring - NASA photo 10.15.07

For myself, there is nothing quite as good as focusing on a challenging engineering problem to get my mind off what they said on the Morning News. Here is a great photo of the rover snooping around on Mars.  Nope, no alien life forms yet, no water yet, but I like their spirit - they keep looking.  Maybe under the next rock they will find something important.  Go Robots!

For those of us on a limited income, the price of gasoline at the pump is going to inspire us to new heights of creativity.  As they say "necessity is the mother of invention".  Affordable transportion is a necessity that we all need - so lets get inventing!  The Morning News says that fuel prices are hitting all time highs, and unlike price changes in the past, are never expected to come down again.  This means that the profit margin for alternatives has never been better.  What are you going to invent?   The Morning News also mentioned unemployment in Michigan is the highest in the country which means that there is a huge ready and willing workforce available on a moments notice in Michigan to manufacture your invention.  Imagine the advantages a Michigan workforce provides for you, they are already here, in the middle of America, English is their native language, they do not need green cards or B2 work visas - that should streamline your HR workload.

RCTC
At the RCTC (Robot Club of Traverse City) meeting Saturday, Teddy from the movie AI was a big hit.  We have two of them here which the kids always want to take home with them.  The kids are always disapointed when I tell them that the talking bears have to stay here at the club house as part of our robot collection.  If you rent the disk version of the movie AI, the extra stuff includes a lot of the details about the 32 robot bears they had to build to cover the range of actions that the "one" Teddy on the screen exhibits.  Of the two we have here one speaks 60 and the other 40 of the 700 phrases recorded by Jack Angel, the voice of Teddy in the movie AI and the voice of Smokey The Bear in the US Park Service's television public announcements. "Only YOU Can Prevent Forrest Fires."  Other robots out and about moving through the crowd at the RCTC meeting were the a "Moon Walker" and a "RoboSapien".  The fun of robotic could inspire inspires young people to become scientists and engineers - to figure out how the magic is done.  Think back a bit, was there a single event or a toy that inspired you to become an engineer?

BORG TECHNOLOGY
In my case I was impressed by what Krell Engineering was capable of in the movie Forbidden Planet and Dr. Morbius' masters project, Robby The Robot, which he built to prove his understanding of what he had learned.   More recently young people have been impressed by Seven of Nine's command of Borg Technology in the Star Trek Voyager TV series and the amazing range of things it is capable of doing.  In real life, the people working on nano-technology have been making rapid progress in developing Borg-like nano-machines and nano-structured materials.

PHONE CALL
MathWorks just called, the person's Caller ID said "No Data" and seemed unconcerned that I usually do not pick up calls that do not identify the caller.  She had not heard of the DARP Urban Challege or the driverless vehicle that the AIM Team is buiding until I told her about it just now.  It would be interesting to know how many people have heard of the race or know anything about it.   Perhaps a survey company will take a poll and tell us?

GO ROBOTS !
