Team #22 Juxtopia
August 20, 2007
DARPA Urban Challenge race team #22 on my list is Juxtopia.
![]()
Juxtopia Group Inc. is the major sponsor so the team name is Juxtopia. The team made up of engineering students from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) DARPA Urban Challenge team and as you might suspect they are on a mission: to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) among inner city youth.
They call the vehicle they are converting into an Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle - UAV Rolling Thunder. The student-volunteers are using this project to learn as much as they can about this expanding area of robotics. Testing is being done in Baltimore. They hope to make their fortune by applying the skills learned preparing for the DARPA Urban Challenge towards production of affordable autonomous vehicles.
They are looking forward to their design being adopted by the US armed forces and the lives that it will save by taking over one of the dangerous battlefield jobs.
The vehicle will need to demonstrate for the DARPA judges that it can navigate and drives entirely on its own with no human driver and no remote control using of a variety of sensors and positioning systems. The vehicle determines the characteristics of its environment to enable it to get from the supply depot to where the troops are and back safely.
Why Develop Autonomous vehicles?
Besides building autonomous vehicles to meet the military's needs (as indicated by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2001, Public Law 106-398), The Juxtopia Group, Inc. believes that developing autonomous robots can provide inner city students a practical example of how to apply science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) knowledge to benefit the nation and provide high-tech solutions to problems in urban communities.
