WINA Webcast a WINNA (sorry...)
December 13, 2007

OK, I couldn't help myself with the headline. I won't do it again...very soon anyway.

The WINA Webcast, Is Wireless Ready for Prime Time is now done, and if you didn't hear it, you can listen on-demand soon via the WINA Website. It should be available within a few days.

The three presenters, Harry Forbes, ARC Advisory Group; Dave Runkle, LCRA; and Greg LaFramboise, Chevron; each gave interesting and different presentations. Dave and Greg both talked about their experiences, the former with power plants and the latter with oil production and refining. Allow me to point out some interesting implications of that.

LCRA and Chevron approached their projects differently. LCRA installed a full wireless "dome" over the facilities, with coverage reaching 95% or better. It's possible to interface with the wireless network virtually anywhere.

Chevron, on the other hand, has begun with small ground-up experiments using wireless instrumentation in local applications. Greg says they are currently using wireless in closed loop control functions, albeit applications that are slow and don't involve things that explode. Nonetheless, it works and bodes well for gradually moving into more interesting applications.

Also bear in mind that power plants and oil refineries are considered critical infrastructure. Both companies have been convinced that wireless security is adequate to protect their operations, and they have high requirements. That in itself is a telling point.

You should check out the Webcast as soon as it's available. It's 90 minutes, but time well spent.
