BP gets it from Illinois lawmakers
July 25, 2007

Politicians are good at attacking bad guys, big faceless corporations, and polluters when they have nothing at stake in their home districts. So BP had its time on the hot seat with members of the Illinois congressional delegation.

The Chicago Tribune characterized it as a "bipartisan buzz saw" this morning. That's easy for them to do because the refinery is in Indiana. There are few jobs to gain or lose on the Illinois side of the border. There is no need to compromise on the pollution levels to keep the plant running.

I am puzzled by one thing in particular about this story, exactly how much sludge or particulates are at stake. I've done some cipherin' and the numbers from various stories don't quite match, assuming water still weighs 8.345 pounds per gallon. More on that tomorrow.

BP may have to revise their plans or at least figure out a way to make it look like they have. Their green image is turning browner by the day.
