Help from the government, really!
April 5, 2007

You have undoubtedly heard of the Department of Homeland Security if you live in or near the United States. It was created after 9/11 and most of us know it for threat color announcements at airports and the fact that we can no longer wear socks with holes in them when we fly.

They do offer resources that can be very valuable if you're involved in cyber security at your facility, and those resources are often free. My suggestion is that you visit their Website (click here to go to www.us-cert.gov/control_systems/) and look at some of the things they offer, including their CS2SAT (acronymical for Control System Cyber Security Self-Assessment Tool). What the site lacks in sophistication, it makes up for in content. Many of these tools were developed with participation from experts at Idaho National Labs. INL has industry liaisons who are very active in the real world and participate in many user groups. You can get a sense of what they're about if you listen to a podcast (click here) with a group from INL that discusses their offerings and what they're doing to keep control systems more secure in all industries.
