FutureGen: We hardly knew ye
January 30, 2008

In the wake of the news of federal budget cuts at Argonne National Labs and Fermilab, it wasn't exactly a surprise to see that plans for the FutureGen facility will likely be shelved. (Check out my posting from December 19.)

The Chicago Tribune has discussed the situation at length. As usual politicians are upset to see a lucrative project put on hold. (Illinois does have perhaps one working senator.) Others can't figure out why this project is being cut while energy spending is supposed to be increasing.

While the FutureGen technology is certainly interesting, I have to wonder about the practicality of spending $1.8 billion to build a 275 MW power plant. Moreover that price will likely climb much higher once the project actually begins. Those are our tax dollars after all.
