Wireless, part 3: More on Sensicast
May 9, 2007

After my posting yesterday, I had a chat with Paul Richards, Sensicast's VP of marketing. While I was at INTEPHEX, I heard that Sensicast had withdrawn from the WirelessHART committee, and I was curious why they had taken that step. Jay Werb, Sensicast's CTO had been involved with HART and the ISA-SP100.11a group, and apparently they felt there was some incompatibilities with him being on both. "We had some issues with HART's intellectual property policies," Richards told me, but didn't go into much detail.

I had to ask because I wondered if they had withdrawn for some other reasons, including the possibility that WirelessHART might not be the compelling technology that will make users decide those secondary variables really are important after all. That possibility has been discussed here in earlier postings. "You could ask why HART has to be involved in a wireless protocol at all," Richards speculated. "Digital HART data can be communicated over virtually any wireless protocol. It's not a technical issue at all."

If that's the case, will Sensicast include HART capability in its instrumentation and communication? "If we felt there was a compelling commercial demand, we'd do it in a heartbeat."
