Who's searching on "engineer?"
August 20, 2008

This afternoon I was searching at the Chicago Tribune Website looking for a story on recent EPA regulations. I didn't find the article, but my eye caught a little squib off to the side that said:

"Top searches--View top searches for the past 24 hours:
iraq
bernie mac
engineering
obituaries
crossword
engineer
health care
prescription
bernie mac funeral
horoscope"

Now that's an interesting list. I can understand Bernie Mac. He's a Chicago native so that's no surprise. Obituaries, Iraq, crossword, also make sense for a newspaper.

But engineering and engineer are two that I would not expect to show up in the top 10. Maybe they've always been there, and I just didn't notice. But after thinking about this for some time, I can't come up with anything in the news lately that would account for it. Running the search turns up a mish-mosh of results, so there's no obvious answer. Presumably the mix of words could change again at any time, so I'll check again tomorrow.

Any ideas? Has the profession suddenly taken on a new panache?
