Has oil peaked?
June 13, 2008

If you're talking about oil prices, probably not. But if you're talking about consumption, maybe it has, at least for a while. Earlier this week, the Chicago Tribune ran an article saying that the U.S. Energy Department (DOE) and the International Energy Agency have both lowered their global oil consumption forecasts because of high prices.

Oil consumption is still climbing in other parts of the world, particularly China, but the DOE says it is declining in the industrialized world and expected to fall by 240,000 bpd in 2008.

One of the first things I wrote when I joined the Control Engineering staff in 2006 was an article about the overall state of the energy industries. I remember including a statistic that said industry analysts expect oil consumption to peak in the U.S. around 2020 based on consumption patterns and demographics. I suspect the same analysts might make that date quite a bit earlier now. Who knows, maybe we're crossing the great divide right now. Something to celebrate even as we feel pain at the gas pump.
