Unimaginative passwords = easy hacking
August 21, 2007

A 23 year old hacker in Spokane, Washington was recently sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of $150,000 for breaking into VoIP systems. While this is a moderately interesting story, there is one point that you might want to take away.

The hacker, one Robert Moore, said that breaking into many of the systems wasn't all that difficult. "The way we got into them is that most of the telecom administrators were using the most basic password - Cisco or admin. They weren't hardening their boxes at all," Moore says in the story.

You probably know where this is going. What kinds of passwords are protecting your control systems? How often do they change? Are they written on post-it notes on the terminals? Look around and see.
