Heading off to Philadelphia
Today I will be flying off to Philadelphia to attend INTERPHEX and the WBF 2008 North American Conference. As important as those things are (and you can read about them on the attached links) I will also finally have an opportunity to visit a third attraction, just a block or two from the convention center: Macy's.
This isn't for shopping. Those who know some history of Philadelphia know that Macy's is the old Wanamaker department store, which is home to the great Wanamaker organ. This is the world's largest functioning pipe organ, and odd as it may seem, it is built into a department store. (The instrument generally accepted as the world's largest organ is nearby in the Atlantic City Convention Center, but that one barely works.) The Wanamaker's built this instrument into their store to attract customers nearly a century ago, and it is meticulously maintained and played virtually daily. I hope to be there Wednesday evening for the 7:00 performance. You should come too if you're at the show. It will be a remarkable experience, trust me.
