Latest on BP controversy
July 23, 2007

The news on the BP Whiting / Lake Michigan pollution story has slowed a bit. The most recent is from last Thursday saying the City of Chicago is entering the fray trying to stop the process from moving ahead.

Dennis Byrne, an occasional Tribune columnist, tried to bring things into perspective this morning. He says the "sludge" really doesn't exist since it is nothing more than the 10 micron and smaller particles that the refinery's treatment plant filters cannot capture. The real sludge is captured as a solid and disposed of in other ways. Moreover he contends that the amount of ammonia released will not be enough for anyone to notice and well below levels the EPA allows. He believes that this could be an attempt by the Daley administration to draw attention from some potentially embarrassing testimony that is coming out of a current organized crime trial.

I suppose it's good that someone is willing to defend BP. They deserve to have their side told, but they can't blame us entirely for being suspicious.

Further bulletins as events warrant.
