Wireless conspiracy theories
September 27, 2007

I generally steer clear of Elvis sightings or ideas of who was responsible for famous assassinations or who canceled the original Star Trek. However, my gossipy side can't resist this one.

If you're going to the ISA Expo next week and you're paying attention to wireless discussions, you may notice that there is something called the ISA100 Family of Standards Interest Meeting scheduled for 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon. ISA describes it as:

"We're already developing ISA100.11a, focused on monitoring, alerting, and control for the process industries. The ISA100.11a standard has taken numerous steps to ensure co-existence with other radios operating in the 2.4 GHz band. Now we're ready to work on the rest of the family. ISA100 co-chair Wayne Manges of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will hold an interest meeting for the family of standards in conjunction with ISA EXPO 2007."

OK, that part is clear enough. Attend the meeting if you're interested in where this is going. You can also see demonstrations of the latest products of companies participating in the ISA100 development.

But here's where it gets weird. The HART Communication Foundation has scheduled a press conference at 3:30 on Tuesday, while the ISA meeting is going on. And topics for discussion include: wireless. (Bet you didn't see that one coming.) The release even says, "Discussion of recent HCF collaborations with ISA SP100 Committee and other leading protocol organizations."

Just coincidence? You decide.
