Another opinion on the leading fieldbus claim
April 11, 2007

This morning I received the latest edition of HMS Industrial Networks e-newsletter. In it there is a graph showing the World Market for Industrial Networking by Protocol: Total New Installed Nodes, 2006. This graph was compiled by IMS Research, and the data HMS shows only lists fieldbus protocols by name.

The leader was "Ethernet, all versions" at about 3.1 million nodes.  The leading specific protocols were Profibus at about 1.8 million nodes with AS-Interface and CAN close behind with 1.7 and 1.6 million nodes, respectively. (There are no specific numbers, only a graph, so I am attempting to interpolate between the lines.)

From there it falls off quickly. Modbus is #4 at 1.2 million. DeviceNet and CC-Link are neck and neck at about 700,000. All the rest are below 250,000.

In the newsletter, they include a quote from IMS analyst John Morse who expects Ethernet protocols to grow at 20.3% annually, however, "Ethernet does not meet the requirements of all users and the more traditional fieldbus technologies will continue to prosper."

Take this information as you will. It's unfortunate that the numbers aren't even larger given the huge segments of the market that are not using any kind of networking below the PLC level. It's doubtful that Ethernet will help that anytime soon, so what will it take to convince people?
