Bigfoot, Lock Ness Monster sighted! Control types
March 19, 2008

After several years of searching it seems there really may be an additional component to the ISA88 list of control. The Make2Pack effort has been struggling with this often misunderstood concept since its start. Sometimes there seemed to be something between the ISA88 Equipment Phase Procedural Control that is capable of being directed by a Recipe and Basic Control. Like Bigfoot and Nessie this elusive concept between Equipment Phase Procedural Control and Basic Control had many sightings but real proof has been difficult to sustain for the community at large.

After a recent SP88 Part 1 meeting it appears that the proof has been accepted that there is indeed something that is yet to be named by the Part 1 group that can exist between the Equipment Phase Procedural Control and Control Module Basic Control. The significant difference between the Equipment Phase and this new type of Equipment Procedural control appears to be that this new concept has all the procedural control characteristics of Equipment Phase control except the Recipe is not able to directly engage it. Commands and control comes from the Equipment Phase and other Components of this new type.

I would liken this to talking about lions — everyone is quite aware of the king of beasts in Africa but when someone describes a sighting of an American Mountain Lion it may be dismissed as just another African Lion, similar in coloring, claws, and roars. The Mountain Lion actually has very different behavioral characteristics (like the male has no mane), similar, and different enough to be distinct. Make2Pack has been calling this elusive entity Equipment Sequenced Control as shown in the Control Component diagram...

...between the Equipment Phase and Basic Control. There still can be and is a form of Basic Sequenced Control that has the characteristics of Basic Control. As with all the models in ISA88 collapsibility allows the user to decide whether or not this Equipment Sequenced Control is of value and to take advantage of it or leave it out. I’m unsure the current name will stand but the concept seems to be gaining acceptance.
