How we can connect an ACS800 series ABB drive though profibus-dp to a Siemens PCS7 system?
July 2, 2007
This question comes to us from M. Salimi, who is an industrial automation engineer with IRISA. We are endebted to Moin Shaikh, DCS marketing consultant at Siemens Energy and Automation Group, for the answer.
The Siemens Simatic PCS 7 system uses Profibus as its backbone for communication between controller and field devices. Since Profibus is native to the system, it is a simple matter of loading the specific *.GSD file for the ABB ACS800 series drive into PCS 7 engineering station and physically connecting the drive to one of the Profibus networks coming from the controller. The GSD file, which contains device-specific definitions and other parameters that allow the Profibus master software (in this case PCS 7) to configure the device, should be available for download from ABB's website or from Profibus' Website. Once the file is downloaded and installed on the PCS 7 system, the ABB drive can be configured like any other Profibus slave device by using PCS 7's hardware configuration tool. With this tool, the drive can be connected by dragging and dropping it from the hardware catalog into the Profibus master network, at which time it can be parametrized.
