Belden expands: Hirschmann cuts ribbon at Americas headquarters Hirschmann Automation and Control Inc., a Belden Co., recently celebrated the inauguration of its new Americas headquarters facility in Chambersburg, PA. The new 35,000 square foot facility features expanded office and warehouse space along with a state-of-the art training and conference center. Hirschmann’s three divisions are located in the new facility: ECS (electronic control systems), INET (industrial networking), and ICON (industrial connectors). Modular RFID: Gateway for machine, in cabinet New Turck 2RFID module for the BL ident RFID system adds to existing BL20 and BL67 network I/O systems. “BL ident’s modular design provides flexible integration into new or existing Turck systems,” says Mark DiSera, product marketing manager for Turck’s network and interface division. “This modularity provides customization in both IP20 rated cabinet installations and IP67 rated field installations,” DiSera says. For wireless, handheld equipment: Direct digital synthesis IC Analog Devices Inc. expanded its direct digital synthesis technology into battery-powered industrial, communications and defense electronics applications with a low-power, low-cost Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) designed for wireless, handheld equipment, the AD9913. It is said to be the first DDS to use only 50 mW of power at a 250-MHz clock rate. It’s under $5 each in volume, company says.
Greater efficiency: Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Control technologies support efforts to measure energy use and use it more efficiency. The new energy law, helped along by National Electrical Manufacturers Association advice, followed a year-long legislative process and modifications prior to congressional passage in December, to get a law that the White House would support. Dec. 19 signature from President Bush made the legislation into law, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Power meter: Web-enabled Ethernet connectivity A new Web-enabled Ethernet communications card option from Schneider Electric for the compact Square D PowerLogic PM800 series power meters helps optimize the monitoring of electrical installations in industrial, commercial or critical power environments, the company says. Industrial Ethernet: First safety I/O node with EtherNet/IP capability Allen-Bradley CompactBlock Guard I/O on EtherNet/IP from Rockwell Automation is said to be the industry’s first safety I/O module with EtherNet/IP industrial Ethernet protocol connectivity. The move expands safety offerings and supports open networks to protect personnel and machinery, the company suggested.
Legalities: Integrator uses wrong measurement, a $2.5 million error As we move into a new year, it is perhaps a good time to pause and reflect about one of the worst legal meltdowns affecting a control system that made it through the courts in 2007 — a dozen-year affair that came to a grinding halt (in all ways that you can imagine that phrase) this past year before the Mississippi Supreme Court.
