Economical sensors for switch point detection
Turck has added PK pressure sensors to its line of pressure instruments. The compact sensors perform economical switch point detection in air and inert gas applications, are IP65 rated and suitable for use in pneumatic and robotic applications. Two body styles, the pico and the nano, support a range of mounting options. Programming is via simple pushbuttons, and the menu may be inverted for additional programming flexibility. Sensors provide two pressure ranges most commonly found in pneumatic applications: -29.5 to 0 inHg and 0 to 145 psi, with 3% accuracy. Two PNP switch points and an integrated M8 connector are featured.

Sensors: Non-contact volumetric measurement of bulk materials
K-Tek has announced two new laser scanners for non-contact volumetric measurement of bulk solids. The company says LM3D is the industry's first real-time, three dimensional volume scanner profiler for bulk materials in silos or stockpiles. The device uses a rotating laser head for multipoint laser scans to measure the uneven surface of stored materials. A three-dimensional map of the surface is created in the scanner memory and the on-board microprocessor immediately calculates the stored material's volume and mass. The LM2D, a real-time, non-contact volume scanner, is designed to measure the flow of bulk solids materials on conveyor belts and
monitor speed. It is an easy-to-use, non-contact alternative to traditional belt scales that incorporates a non-contact belt speed sensor with Doppler radar to measure conveyor speed. The scanner head scans the profile of flowing material on the belt; an on-board microprocessor uses information from the scanning head to calculate volume and mass throughput in real time.

Low-cost 8-bit PIC microcontrollers
Microchip Technology Inc. has announced a family of low-cost 8-bit Flash PIC microcontrollers (MCUs). The 28- and 40-pin PIC16F722/3/4/6/7 (PIC16F72X) MCUs can operate down to 1.8 V and feature a 16 MHz internal oscillator; up to 14 Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) channels; communication (SPI, I2C, AUSART) and two Capture, Compare, and PWM (CCP) modules; plus the mTouch Sensing Solution peripheral. The integrated devices are suited for a range of applications in the industrial (digital water heaters, security systems, HVAC control) and other markets. The PIC16F72X MCUs have an operating voltage range of 1.8 – 5.5 V, with
the low-power PIC16LF72X devices offering lower standby and other power-consumption specifications from 1.8 – 3.6 V. Both variations feature a Timer1 Gate that runs from the internal 16 MHz oscillator.

DC-to-DC converters
AutomationDirect has extended its Rhino PSP line of power supplies to include DC-to-DC converters. Available with wide input ranges (9.5 to 18 VDC and 18 to 75 VDC), the four available models can be operated from all popular DC supply voltage systems. Tightly regulated output voltage provides a reliable power source for applications such as industrial process controls and factory automation. Units can be used to isolate a specific load from the 24 volt bus voltage. Install with snap-on DIN-rail mounting and detachable screw terminal blocks, or included wall-mount bracket. Converters are backed by a 3-year warranty.

RFID tag extends temperature range
Intelleflex Corp. has released its SXT-7110, an advanced RFID tag designed to withstand harsh temperatures and demanding environments. The high-temperature resin casing and battery ensure performance in temperatures from -40 °C to +125 °C. Applications for the SXT-7110 include mounting on vehicles and equipment that are subject to repeated steam pressure washing, high heat or severe cold. The durable tag performs well in challenging RF environments and can be read across a range of angles, due to the inverted F-plane antennae design. Industrial ATX computer power supplies
Lambda has launched a range of industrial low-profile ATX computer power supplies. The ZWX-Series are open frame ac-dc power supplies that provide five voltages needed for high-end industrial computers, including +3.3 V, +5 V, +12 V, -12 V and +5 V (standby); they are 1U rack/enclosure mountable. ZWX300 includes a sixth output (a second +12 V) to support extra drives, memory, and fans. Applications include situations where convection cooling is preferred; higher power can be provided when fan cooling is desired. The convection-cooled power ratings are 90 W, 120 W, and 150 W. With forced air cooling (30 cfm), the ratings jump to 153 W, 204 W,
and 255 W and peak power ratings add from 30 to 40 W to these figures. Features include active PFC, logic level On/Off control, 80% and higher efficiencies, overcurrent and overvoltage protection, remote-sense on the +3.3 V output, and no minimum load requirement.

Servo drive suits extreme environments
Copley Controls has launched a hardened version of the panel-mounting Accelnet servo drive to meet extreme industrial environments. Extended temperature, humidity, vibration, and shock ranges provide security in non-extreme applications. Series R20 provides networking and stand-alone motion control for brush and brushless motors, and direct drive linear motors and actuators. R20 drives deliver up to 3.200 kW peak power, are available for operating voltages 55 V, 90 V, and 180 V, and deliver 9 A, 18 A, and 36 A peak currents. The drives’ wide span of Command, Encoder Feedback, and Communications interfaces allow a single-drive model to
work in different systems. Control modes include indexing, point-to-point, and PVT (position, velocity, and torque control), plus electronic camming and gearing. CME 2 setup software enables users to automate time-consuming system setup and commissioning.

Triaxial IEPE accelerometer
Dytran Instruments has also introduced a miniature triaxial accelerometer, the 3023M20, which uses quartz-shear technology with 2-wire internal IEPE electronics. It mounts with adhesives into very small spaces with a vertical dimension of 0.280 in. and a weight of 2.4 grams. Three miniature quartz laminar shear-mode accelerometer elements are mounted to a single support welded into titanium housing. Elements are mounted orthogonally to each other to measure the complete motion of a point. Three miniature IC amplifiers are built into the instrument, one for each axis, to lower impedance of the quartz seismic elements by many orders of magnitude to allow driving of long cables without affecting sensitivity.
