Non touch screens: Researcher wins grant for holographic instrument panel controls

An Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor, Tarek El Dokor, has been awarded a $50,000 Honda Initiation Grant for development of holographic instrument panel controls and displays. "It implements a software alternative to what is currently a hardware solution to various controls," said El Dokor, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Prescott, AZ, campus.

Partnership: Wonderware names InSource "Wonderware Southeast" partner

InSource Solutions, an independent Wonderware software distribution partner, has signed a distributor agreement to conduct business as Wonderware Southeast. Norm Thorlakson, Wonderware vice president of North American sales, said, "To best deliver successful results for customers who are utilizing Wonderware hardware and software solutions, it requires new technical and IT skills and new organization and consulting capabilities. We believe that InSource has the optimal skills and organizational structure to deliver."

Pressure: Oil & gas industry controller benefits from embedded database

A high availability, in-memory embedded database system from McObject has been selected by Hydril Co. as the cornerstone of new pressure-control technology for the oil and gas industry. Hydril chose the fault-tolerant eXtremeDB and its remote procedure call (RPC) implementation running on the QNX Neutrino real-time operating system (RTOS) for key data management and network communication roles in its new pressure control systems.

PACs: Colfax Corp. acquires Fairmount Automation

Colfax Corporation has announced the completion of its acquisition of proprietary programmable automation controller (PAC) manufacturer Fairmount Automation Inc. of Newtown Square, PA. Fairmount develops custom control algorithms and software for process control and machinery automation applications, and provides engineering services and project integration support. Terms were not disclosed.

Digital factory interface: XML control logic standard accepted by AutomationML

The XML standard, an open and non-proprietary software interface for the interchange of industrial and process control programs, is progressing and gaining acceptance, according to a spokesperson for PLCopen, the organization that administers it.The AutomationML (Automation Markup Language) organization has accepted the format for the description of control. The XML standard lets users pick best-of-breed production hardware and software — including PLC and PAC hardware, and PLM, modeling and simulation software — to make virtual design and production simulation a reality.

Power distribution: Enterprise data historian supports management of power distribution

OSIsoft, a performance management software company, has announced that Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator Inc. (Midwest ISO) has implemented OSIsoft's PI system for monitoring and managing Midwest Energy Market, one of the world's largest regional bulk power transmission organizations. Midwest ISO ensures the operation of nearly 94,000 miles of interconnected high voltage power lines that support transmission of more than 129,000 MW of energy. The PI system enterprise data historian provides Midwest ISO with real-time data management to enhance grid reliability and scalability, and minimize risk.
